Inaugural visit to Singapore by Professor Craig Calhoun, Director of LSE, 18 March 2013

A total of 62 Alumni and Friends of the LSE gathered at Au Jardin (Les Amis) in the Botanic Gardens to welcome Professor Craig Calhoun, Director of LSE in his inaugural visit to Singapore.

Prof. Calhoun took up his post as LSE Director on 1 September 2012, having left the United States where he was University Professor at New York University and Director of the Institute for Public Knowledge and President of the Social Science Research Council.

Prof. Calhoun's commitment to and keen interest in the alumnus saw him take time out amidst his packed 1-day schedule in Singapore to meet with alumni. This event drew alumni of all ages, and a diversity of cultures, and nationalities.

In his “State of the School” address, Prof. Calhoun gave an update on the rejuvenation plans of the LSE campus, with its first new building in more than 40 years – Saw Swee Hock Student Centre – expected to open in 2013. The new student centre is named after its donor, Professor Saw Swee Hock, a Singaporean alumni and Honorary Fellow of the LSE and who was also at this dinner event.

Speaking of LSE’s future direction, Prof. Calhoun stressed the importance of sharing knowledge – beyond simply accumulating it. As an educational institution focusing on social sciences, the school will strive to be different; cutting-edge, with increased links to international academia.

Au Jardin, otherwise known as “in the garden” - a French fine-dining restaurant in an elegantly restored 1920s colonial residence nestled in the lush greenery of Singapore Botanic Gardens. In this unique setting, alumni enjoyed a specially designed 4-course menu, free-flow of fine wines and lively conversations with Prof. Calhoun and friends, making this event a great success.

Special thanks to senior alumnus Desmond Lim, who generously sponsored the fine wines and subsidized the food to make this event happen.

The Committee would also like to thank our alumnae, Sue Ling who custom-designed and hand-made cufflinks as a gift and souvenir for Prof. Calhoun to bring back to LSE!
